What about the great amalgam debate?
For more than 150 years, amalgam has been the most popular
restorative material used by dentists. As a direct filling
material, amalgam has served patients well providing a
good clinical track record with few documented cases
showing adverse effects, and those have been limited to
localized allergic reactions.
However the safety of dental amalgam has been
periodically questioned. To date no health consequences
have been linked to mercury release from amalgam fillings
and the body of scientific evidence supports the safety of
amalgam. At the same time dental offices are facing
increasing scrutiny by regulators regarding chemical waste
with most of the attention focused on amalgam.
Learning objectives:
• Chemistry of amalgam
• Background science of amalgam waste
• Review of chemical waste issues
• Best management practices.
