Decision-Making
Theory and its Affect on Clinical Outcomes
Traditionally, the focus of the clinician has been
on “doing the procedure” versus the decision-making
process to justify the procedure. The reasons for this
approach to dental care are many. One major reason is that
the dentist is remunerated for the procedure or “skilled
labor” while the “intellectual property” that justifies
the procedures is an implied aspect and cost of the
treatment.
In part, this approach to care has de-emphasized the
decision-making process and adversely affected the
delivery of care. The current “cosmetic” movement or
“white-wave” in dentistry is a manifestation of this
environment as reported in the Wall Street Journal. This
presentation will focus on the decision-making aspect of
what we do as health care providers and suggest some
solutions to improve our clinical outcomes and retain the
trust of the public long-term. |
