Topic: The
Blending of Art and Science in Dentistry
The need and the ability to
demonstrate creativity through art is indigenous to
humans. That need and ability separate us from the
animal world. We as dentists strive for evidence
based performance (Science) also we are fortunate
that through our work we have found a vehicle for
our creativity (Art). Many dentists are also
involved with art outside of the profession.
My own earth art and stone sculpture have provided
me a foray into the art world and an opportunity to
address the public. I like to give dentistry the
credit for my inspiration.
For me the blending of art and science has
manifested itself historically in restorative
dentistry with golf foil, the cast gold restoration,
the restoration of endontically treated teeth,
perio-prosthodontics, the re-construcion of
occlusion, implant prosthodontics and aesthetic
dentistry.
The 26 minute power point presentation will
underscore these observations.
